Please
join us at 1:00 – 2:30 EDT on May 15 for a free EPA webinar on
Integrated Pest Management in Child Care Settings. This
webinar will provide information on how to reduce exposures to
pests and pesticides by addressing the underlying conditions that can
lead to infestations rather than relying on pesticides for control
of pests such as cockroaches, rodents, ants and flying
insects.
The presentation explains the relationship between the special
vulnerability of young children and pesticides use in child care
centers and focuses on actions to eliminate pests from child care
centers using Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
techniques. We will discuss how pests sneak into
centers, how to exclude them, what types of conditions they need to
survive once inside and how to eliminate them. The audience is
given a virtual tour of pest-vulnerable areas common to child care
centers, including kitchens, storage areas, nap time areas,
classrooms, and bathrooms. Outdoor issues such as
standing water and garbage areas are also discussed. We
review the essential ingredients for developing an IPM program,
what should be included in your center’s plan and why staff
involvement is important for a successful program. By the end of
the presentation you will see that IPM methods provide a healthier
learning environment for our children, better long-term control of
pests, reduced pesticide use, it often lowers the costs for pest
management, reduces liability of the facility, and promotes
cooperation between staff.
The Presenter will be Marcia Anderson from the EPA R2 Pesticides
Program. The moderator is Kathy Seikel from EPA’s Office of
Children’s Health Protection
