Bipartisan Legislation Retain Sulfuryl Fluoride's
Food Uses Dropped in U.S. House
Bipartisan legislation the National Pest Management Association has
been working on that retains the food uses for the fumigant
sulfuryl fluoride was recently filed in the U.S. House of
Representatives.
The Pest Free Food Supply Act (H.R. 1496) directs the Administrator
of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to withdraw a January
2011 proposed order revoking sulfuryl fluoride's food uses.
The proposed order, which was driven by the threat of activist
group litigation, was issued not because of any issue related to
sulfuryl fluoride but rather because excessively high levels of
naturally occurring fluoride in certain drinking water systems and
fluoride in toothpaste pose an increased risk of fluorosis in
children. The Agency's inclusion of those and other
non-pesticidal substances in the risk assessment for sulfuryl
fluoride eliminated the mere consideration of sulfuryl fluoride's
food uses.
NPMA applauds the leadership of Congressmen Tom Graves (R-GA), Kurt
Schrader (D-OR) and the 13 other original cosponsors of the Pest
Free Food Supply Act. Click here to read Congressman Graves'
press release on the introduction of the bill.

OR Gov. Signs Bed Bug Bill Into Law
Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber recently signed a bill into law
shielding certain bed bug data from public records law in an effort
to encourage voluntary reporting.
Under the bill, bed bug infestations reported by pest control
operators to a public health authority would be kept confidential.
The location of the infestation, identity of the property owner and
information describing the infestation would be exempt from public
records law.
Oregon becomes the first state in two years to pass bed bug
specific legislation. Since bed bug populations in the United
States rebounded a decade ago Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois Maine, New
York have also approved and enacted bed bug specific legislation
and Kansas has implemented administrative rules.

AZ Legislature Clears Major Pest Management
Legislation
The Arizona House recently approved, on a 58-0 vote, comprehensive
pest management legislation that makes significant changes to the
state's current laws governing structural pest management. The bill
will soon be forwarded to Governor Jan Brewer for her consideration.
The byproduct of the recommendations of the Task Force on
Structural Pest Management, Senate Bill 1290 and accompanying
rulemaking revise termite action reporting form and other fees as
well as qualifying party requirements. The legislation also
requires the Arizona Department of Agriculture to provide, through
an interagency agreement, management and administrative services to
the Office of Pest Management (OPM). Present law requires the
Director of the Department to appoint an OPM Acting Director. Click here to read SB 1290 and related
information.

Effective Decision-Making in Management
One significant differentiator between effective and
ineffective managers is the amount of information they require to
make decisions. Some managers are shoot-from-the-hip, and make
ill-advised decisions that lead to failure. On the other side is
the person who requires far more information to make a decision
than is appropriate for the situation. So which are you?
Self-assess your decision making skills in this recent article.
